"I Left My Heart In San Francisco" by Tony Bennett

"I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was written in 1954 by George Cory and Douglass Cross
The loveliness of Paris
Seems somehow sadly gay
The glory that was Rome
Is of another day
I've been terribly alone
And forgotten in Manhattan
I'm going home to my city by the bay.

I left my heart in San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me.
To be where little cable cars
Climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
Your golden sun will shine for me!

Eric Burdon & The Animals - San Franciscan Nights

enjoy yourself at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmIy7Ch4M84

the lyrics follows as below:

This following program is dedicated to the city and people of
San Franciscan, who may not know it but they are beautiful and so
is their city this is a very personal song, so if the viewer
cannot understand it particularly those of you who are European
residents save up all your brand and fly trans love airways to
San Franciscan U.S.A., then maybe you'll understand the song, it
will be worth it, if not for the sake of this song but for the
sake of your own peace of mind.

Strobe lights beam create dreams
walls move minds do too
on a warm San Franciscan night
old child young child feel alright
on a warm San Franciscan night
angels sing leather wings
jeans of blue Harley Davisons too
on a warm San Franciscan night
old angels young angels feel alright
on a warm San Franciscan night.

I wasn't born there perhaps I'll die there
there's no place left to go, San Franciscan.

Cop's face is filled with hate
heavens above he's on a street called love
when will they even learn
old cop young cop feel alright
on a warm San Franciscan night
the children are cool
they don't raise fools
it's an american dream
includes indians too.

Besides, we had a great difficulty in understanding the meaning of the song, though there aren't any difficult words. it has something to do with the anti-Vietnam war according to wiki.
Why do they constantly emphasize it's a 'warm night'?
What is the meaning of the angel and the cop? What does the contrast between them  stand for?
What kind of person are 'fools'?
Why do they talk about the 'Indians'?
Anyone who had an idea about them plz tell us.Thx.

(Sittin' on) The Dock of The Bay

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzrXc68gNjQ

Written by Otis Redding, Steve Cropper

Lyrics:

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

(whistle)

Lights lyrics
Songwriters: Neal Schon;Steve Perry

When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
Do I wanna be there in my city?

Oh, oo, oh
Ohh, oo, ohh
Oh, oo, oh

So you think you're lonely
Well my friend I'm lonely too
I wanna get back to my city by the bay

Ohh, ohh
Oh, oo, oh

It's sad, oh there's been mornings
Out on the road without you
Without your charms

Oh, oo, oh
My, my, my
My, my, my
Ohh, ohh
Oh, oo, oh

When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
Do I wanna be there in my city?

(Oh, oo, oh)
Ohh, oo, oh
Oh, oh, oh

When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
Do I wanna be there in my city?

Oh, oo, oh
Ohh, oo, oh
Oh, oh, oh
(Hmm)
Ohh, oo, oh
Oh, oh, oh

UPDATE!!! Very Important: Book Presentation info from Peter

Hello everyone,

sorry for the potential confusion. On Thursday I told the class that the book presentations would be postponed (put off) until Tuesday of this week, not Monday as had been posted on the blog earlier. I realize the blog was not updated and it may have seemed that the book presentations were for Monday. They are not. Today, Monday we will have individual presentations. UPDATE: We will not go to the Oakland Museum today as it is closed! We will reschedule for later this week.

Union Square - James

Union square was crowded even though the night fell.

I'll focus on the history of Union Square, including the establishment and the naming of the plaza.
Also I'll talk about the monument which was set in the middle of the square.
