Vocabulary - Gold Rush


glittery-aj. bright, consisting of many flashing points of light; shining, gleaming. Eg. glittery earings
shallows-n. an area of shallow water.
shallow aj. Measuring only a short distance from the top to the distance.
history in the making-Expressions when something big being produced and someone believes it will be succcessful
to strike it rich-to suddenly make a lot of money
Eg.It comes as no surprise that many people want to strike it rich by winning the lottery.
Epidemic-
1  a large number of cases of a disease that happen at the same time
Eg.Over 500 people died during last year's flu epidemic.
2  a sudden increase in the number of times that something bad happens
Eg. Britain is suffering an epidemic of petty crime.
isthmus-a narrow piece of land with water on both sides, that connects two larger areas of land. Eg.the Isthmus of Panama
drowning-If you say that a person or thing is drowning in something, you are emphasizing that they have a very large amount of it, or are completely covered in it. Eg. people who gradually found themselves drowning in debt.
famine-a situation in which a large number of people have little or no food for a long time and many people die:Eg. the great potato famine in Ireland
harsh-
harsh conditions are difficult to live in and very uncomfortable.
harsh sound means unpleasantly loud and rough sound
harsh light/color means unpleasantly bright
tedious-something that is tedious continues for a long time and is not interesting 
Eg.The work was tiring and tedious
backbreaking-backbreaking work is physically difficult and makes you very tired
squatting-to squat is to sit with your knees bent under you and your bottom just off the ground, balancing on your feet. Eg. Miners are squatting beside the river.
trough-

1container  a long narrow open container that holds water or food for animals:a horse trough
2low point   a short period of low activity, low prices etc :The graph showed peaks and troughs of activity

hydraulics /hīˈdrôliks/ - study of the mechanics of fluids
to stick aroundbe available or ready for a certain function or service
out of range - a) out of scope; b) Fifth studio album by singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco, released in 1994
disputes - disagreement, argument, or debate
disobey - refuse to go along with, refuse to follow, refuse to obey
to take matters into your own hands - to deal with a problem yourself because the people who should have dealt with it have failed to do so
to irrigate - water; supply with water
to oversee - supervise (a person or work)
drastic - severe, radical
to sift /sifting - to separate or scatter (things), pass through a sieve
abundant - present in great quantity
to extract - remove or take out
rudimentary - basic, initial, fundamental
